TODAY IN COMIC BOOK HISTORY: July 30, 1966
BATMAN: THE MOVIE, the first full-length theatrical Batman film, was released in theaters 48 years ago today.
Batman had become a cultural phenomenon mostly due to it’s colorful characters, it’s light tone, go-go music and camp. So a movie adaptation of the hit TV show was a natural progression and it happened at the peak of the show’s popularity.
The film revolved around The Joker, Riddler, Catwoman and The Penguin’s attempt to take over the world using an industrial dehydrator that turns people to dust. Interestingly underneath the silliness of the story is a plea for world peace from the dynamic duo and a conflict of weather Batman can force peace onto people or if they must come to it themselves.
Of course what most people remember is the line: "Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb." Which sums up the film pretty well.
